Since the Road King II came out, this amp is somewhat obsolete. I'd only recommend buying one if you find a good deal on one used. That said, if you already have one, there's no reason to run out and buy the new version. It's still one of the most versatile amps on the market that can deliver nearly a tone for nearly any genre you can think of. [read more on Audiofanzine]

I bought this unit at Guitar Center in Cincinnati for approx $2600 with tax. I switched to the road king from a dual rectifier solo head. In order to explain why I went to the road king, I'll talk a little about why the solo head didn't do it for me. First off, the dual and triple rectifier solo heads both have reputations for being these absolute "gain monsters" that I dont think they are. I never could get the all out crunch that I wanted unless I hot-rodded my Ibanez guitars with emg81's and on-board emg pa-2 preamps, and even then it still wasn't $1500 worth of tone in my opinion. I think the solo head is more for a new metal bangin on the power chords kind of amp.
The Road King Is The God Of All Amps!! It's gain channels are infinitely better than the solo head, due to the fact that you can drive the amp with different combinations of 6L6's and EL34's to get all kinds of different varieties. This amps gain sounded better on a cheap Ibanez rg270 than my solo head sounded on one of my american Jacksons with active electronics. The two independent effects loops make dialing in multiple sounds really easy, and the foot controller is all you need to control everything. The clean channels on this amp are so versitile that I don't think I'll ever need to buy another amp. I compared this unit side by side with the triple rectifier, and there is absolutely no contest. If you want crunch like you've never heard, but also demand the versitility to play solos and use multiple effects, this is the amp to get!
The price!!! I think all the big names in rock and metal use these amps not only for the tone, but because they are the only ones that can afford them. It is without a doubt the best amp I've ever heard, but I wish it was in a price range that more people could handle. I sold my solo head for a $1000 and a guitar, and still shelled out $1400 bucks.
The construction is excellent, as is everything with mesa. They take care in packing and shipping, and you can tell it is a hand made amplifier.
If you have the extra money and really want a killer metal amp, this one is for you. If you already have a solo head and you don't have the money, don't check out the road king like I did, because it will surely dissapoint you with your current setup.
